The 2 Minute Bedtime Ritual for Better Rest (Ayurveda Style)


It doesn’t even make sense how relaxed I feel with a simple ingredient from my kitchen cabinet! That’s the beauty of Ayurveda though, powerful and simple practices create shifts that feel almost magical.


One of my favorite nightly rituals is oiling the feet (called Pada Abhyanga in Sanskrit). It takes only a couple of minutes, but the effects ripple into your sleep, your nervous system, and even your dreams!

Ayurveda’s Wisdom

Ayurveda teaches that the feet are a gateway to the body. They contain marma points that connect to your organs and nervous system. When you massage warm oil into the soles, you’re not just moisturizing dry skin; you’re grounding scattered energy and sending a signal of calm to your entire system.


Traditionally, foot oiling is said to:

  • Balance excess Vata (the “windy,” restless energy)

  • Promote deep, restful sleep

  • Soothe the nervous system

  • Nourish tissues and skin



What does Modern Science Say About this?

  • Nerve-rich zones: 

    The soles of your feet are packed with nerve endings. Massage and warmth stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (your “rest + digest” mode).


  • Absorption + hydration: 

    While the pores on your feet aren’t technically larger, they are highly permeable. Oils penetrate the outer layers of skin, delivering hydration (and sometimes active plant compounds).


  • Body’s thermostat: 

    The feet are usually the coolest part of the body. Warming them with oil before bed helps your brain register safety and comfort, perfect conditions for sleep.


  • Better dreaming: Relaxation and circulation improvements can deepen REM sleep, where most dreams occur. That’s why some people notice more vivid or unusual dreams after oiling.
